Of all the impressive dunk contests each year, few produce a more impressive and complete collection of dunks than the City of Palms Classic, a Florida invitational that typically hosts many of the nation’s best teams each year. As a result, the Classic also tends to host many of the nation’s most athletic players -- and dunkers -- creating one heck of a dunk contest come the end of the tournament.
The 2012 edition was no exception, with a handful of the nation’s top dunkers facing off for the coveted dunk contest crown. As it turns out, even if BYU fans can’t look forward to hosting Jabari Parker next year, they can still be excited about hosting one of the nation’s most athletic dunkers.
That dunker is Lone Peak (Utah) High senior Eric Mika. He won the event with a slam on which he caught a lob from teammate Nick Emery off the backboard that found Mike when he was out of bounds, then finished the dunk. His slam earned a perfect score, which locked up the contest title.
Still, it’s questionable whether Mika’s dunk was truly the greatest one completed at the event. Rather, the first dunk you see in the video above was thrown down by Isaiah Dennis, a senior guard from McDonough (Ga.) Eagle’s Landing High. The slam came over two of Dennis’ teammates who stand a whopping 6-foot-10 and 6-foot-7.
The trick, of course, is that Dennis stands just 5-foot-11. Somehow he elevated high enough to clear both of the much taller forwards. That is some leap.
Remarkably, Dennis has yet to receive significant interest from any major colleges. Perhaps that will change thanks to that one major slam. The results alone might deem that he deserve another look at the very least.
