In a Friday night faceoff in California's talent rich Marmonte League, one player stood out for Oak Park (Calif.) High, scoring 14 points to pilot his squad past league rival Simi Valley (Calif.) High.
There might normally be nothing out of the ordinary about an outstanding athlete scoring two touchdowns and a two-point conversion of sorts, but Oak Hill star Justin Green is a bit different. As highlighted by the Ventura County Star, the junior isn't a running back, quarterback or wide receiver. He's a defensive lineman.
"I don't even know how to comprehend it," Green told the Star. "It's beyond what I can understand with football right now."
If Green's 14-point day sounds hard to believe, it is. Still, he earned every point he put on the board. The defensive lineman scored his team's first touchdown on an interception return, then followed that up with a forced safety just before halftime. Finally, with his team needing a spark entering a tie game in the fourth quarter, Green popped up for another interception return for a touchdown.
Two touchdowns, one safety, 14 points. Yet even that incredible line didn't capture Green's remarkable day in full. According to his coach, Oak Park head coach Terry Shorten, the lineman also recovered three fumbles over the course of the game.
Fourteen points and five turnovers in a single outing? Maybe Green is right. There's no way that can happen again.
"We really liked our chances tonight," Oak Park coach Terry Shorten said. "It was a real good measuring stick for where we are at this year and how our team's developed.
"Our defense played lights out. Justin Green, two interceptions, three fumbles recoveries, an incredible effort."
