U-17 volleyball tourney held at same site as HempCon, major medical marijuana convention

It is the kind of complication that someone should have seen coming: One of the most high-profile prep volleyball events in California was held in the exact same facility as Northern California's largest convention dedicated to medical marijuana.

As reported by the San Jose Mercury News, the San Jose McEnery Convention Center played host to both a regional 17-and-under volleyball tournament and HempCon 2012, a California meet-up for users of medical marijuana statewide.

As one can imagine, parents of players taking part in the volleyball tournament were less than thrilled that their children could walk off a court and potentially get a contact high from another meeting down the hall.

"I'm just beside myself that we're actually paying money to put our kids in front of all this marijuana," Narda Skov, whose two daughters competed at the event at the McEnery Center, told the Mercury News. "I know there are a lot of great things about San Jose, but this weekend, I feel like it's one big Burning Man."

According to the director of the company that runs the McEnery Center, the two events were held in separate buildings. Still, with roughly 15,000 attendees at HempCon, dwarfing the total number of volleyball players on site, the chance of the athletic teens avoiding running into someone who was high, or the product itself, was not ideal.

Incredibly, the weekend double bill wasn't the first time that volleyball players had run into strange convention goers. In January, the Northern California Volleyball Association tournament was held at the McEnery Center alongside FurCon, a grouping of people who dress up in full body fur costumes.

The combination of the two weekends of dual events was enough to push some parents like Skov over the edge.

"First we had the fuzzy people, now we have HempCon," Skov said. "Come on, San Jose! What's happening?"
