A Massachusetts high school baseball coach has been suspended for the remainder of the 2012 season for a verbal altercation with one of his players, just days after earning region-wide attention for winning his 500th game.
As first reported by the Boston Herald, Longtime Boston (Mass.) Boston College High baseball coach Norm Walsh was suspended for the remainder of the 2012 season because of a contentious argument with an unspecified BC High player which allegedly moved into the realm of "inappropriate language."
"Norm has been suspended for the remainder of the baseball season for inappropriate language," BC High athletic director Jon Bartlett told the Herald.
While the decisive action against Walsh may have been surprising, it was made even more jolting because of the attention he had recently received for reaching an astonishing 500 victories. Walsh has led the BC High program since 1980; his team earned its 500th victory under his charge with a 6-3 win against Malden (Mass.) Catholic School, a victory which both clinched a tie of the Catholic Conference title for his school and made Walsh the 12th coach in state history to earn 500 wins.
No further details about Walsh's actions or his future have been revealed, but Bartlett did disclose that Walsh's assistant coach John Lynch would take over the team for the final regular-season game and the forthcoming state playoffs.
Needless to say, Lynch has some mighty large shoes to fill.
