Chad Curtis had an illustrious professional baseball career, winning two World Series titles during his 10 years in the major leagues. But his high school coaching career could be over before he even had the opportunity to start his new job as head coach of the football team at Lakewood (Mich.) High.
According to MLive.com, the Detroit Free Press and other news outlets throughout the state of Michigan, Curtis is under investigation for allegations of improperly touching four female students at Lakewood Schools. The former major leaguer spent the past year as a substitute teacher and volunteer in the weight room at the high school.
He's since been suspended from his current job as the school investigates the incidents. The allegations are very serious and could end up not only costing Curtis his current and future job, but could lead to legal action, if true.
When asked to expound on where the school was with things, Lakewood Schools Superintendent Michael O'Mara told MLive.com, "I'll have to leave it at that."
This isn't Curtis' first job in the high school ranks. He was the athletic director at NorthPointe Christian Schools, in Grand Rapids, from 2007 to 2009, but was dismissed for unspecified reasons. The job at Lakewood would have been his first head-coaching position.
It's important to remember that Curtis is innocent until proven guilty. While he may end up beating the allegations, one does have to wonder if the fact he was accused in the first place will force Lakewood into looking for another football coach.
All schools take inappropriate touching allegations seriously, and the fact that Curtis is even under investigation in such a public way isn't a good sign. For the moment, it looks like Curtis' future in the high school ranks is in dire jeopardy.
