A high school softball coach and teacher at a New Jersey Catholic school has been arrested and charged with sexual assault after she allegedly had a sexual relationship with a student at the school in which she coached.
According to NJ.com and CBS New York, among other sources, 28-year-old Wood-Ridge (N.J.) High softball coach Jillian Clementi was arrested and charged with sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child for holding an ongoing sexual relationship with a former male Wood-Ridge student.
The softball coach allegedly met with the student at her house on multiple occasions while he was still a student at the school, though he has since graduated, according to Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli.
Clementi, a former all-state softball player at Washington Township (N.J.) Immaculate Heart Academy, had returned to teach social studies at the school since 2008. The Archdiocese of Newark which is in charge of Sacred Heart officially suspended the coach and teacher indefinitely shortly after she was arrested.
"She's out of the classroom and she's not part of the faculty now," Jim Goodness, the Newark diocese spokesman, told NJ.com. "We view these as very serious accusations."
While there was no immediate word of any prospective court dates for the 28-year-old, the Newark diocese had already acted quickly to minimize damage from her incident, notifying parents about the allegations against the teacher and former star athlete.
