Prep Rally previously brought you the story of a Massachusetts girls hockey playoff game which was marred by a fan for one team who distracted the other team's players and goalie with a laser pointer. While the outcome of the contest was allowed to stand, further investigation uncovered precisely who was responsible for the distracting laser pointer. Now that parent is facing criminal charges.
As reported by ABC News and Boston CBS affiliate WBZ, among other sources, 42-year-old Joseph Cordes, the parent of a Winthrop (Mass.) High player, was charged with disturbing the peace for shining a laser pointer at Medway-Ashland (Mass.) High players. He will be summoned to East Boston District Court in the coming days, though no date has been set.
"I feel like a complete jerk," Cordes told WBZ. "It was very stupid, completely immature for a 42-year-old man to be doing that. My daughter, the humiliation I put her through is sickening to tell you the truth."
While Medway-Ashland officials petitioned to have the third period of the teams' playoff game replayed, Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association officials denied that request, instead ruling that Winthrop's 3-1 victory would remain final.
Throughout it all, officials connected with both programs have made their disgust at the father's actions quite public.
"The girls didn't do anything wrong. They were playing a hockey game," Winthrop Superintendent John Macero told ABC News. "An individual did something awful which affected these girls. It was unnecessary. It changed the whole dynamics of it all. It made a special night not so special anymore and that was unfortunate."
