Gary Harris is one of the nation's top recruits, and he happens to play in the heart of Hoosiers country, right where the mythology of high school basketball and Midnight Madness were both born. Perhaps that makes his entry into Indiana hoops folklore all the more fitting.
Harris, who has committed to play at Michigan State, earned a spot among past Hoosier state greats with the incredible buzzer beating three-pointer you see above, a shot which gave his Fishers (Ind.) Hamilton Southeastern High squad an 86-83 victory against Indianapolis (Ind.) North Central High in one of the most hyped opening round playoff games in the history of any state's high school basketball tournament.
Though the two teams -- both of which were ranked in the state's top-5 -- were evenly matched and played neck-and-neck all night, Harris' heroics eventually won the day. With Hamilton Southeast trailing 83-81 with less than 30 seconds remaining, Harris drew a foul and hit both free throws to tie the game. Harris and his teammates then forced an uncharacteristic North Central turnover, giving Hamilton Southeast the ball back for a final shot with just 4.6 seconds remaining.
It turns out that was all the time Harris needed. The star shooting guard got the inbounds pass, put down a couple of dribbles and then threw up a pitch perfect bomb from just inside midcourt, closing out his evening with 33 points, all of which were instrumental in handing his team a truly memorable win.
All that was left to do was watch the Hamilton Southeast faithful rush the court in complete delirium, setting off one of the biggest celebrations anyone will ever see in a high school gym. Clearly, some were not listening to the public address announcer's pleas to "Please stay off the floor!" before the final possession.
