What's that up in the sky? It's a bird, it's a plane ... no wait, it's Orange (Calif.) Lutheran School star Gabe York, and he's throwing down one of the filthiest slams we've seen in any level of basketball this year, without question.
York's dunk in the video you see above comes from his squad's 70-46 victory against Dana Hills (Calif.) High in the Division IA playoffs on Friday night, a win which showcased a complete team performance for Orange Lutheran. Still, that impressive team performance was largely overshadowed by York's singular moment of athletic brilliance, with the Arizona signee's ability to elevate completely above a Dana Hills defender to throw down what appeared to be an overly optimistic alley oop sending the Orange Lutheran home crowd into absolute hysterics.
Keep in mind that York is only 6-foot-2, yet he was still able to get up to a point where he's looking directly at the rim from an even elevation, with his right arm up near his elbow completely above the rim. Put all that together and it's not hard to understand why his slam drew some of the season's most broad platitudes.
One YouTube commenter called York's slam the dunking equivalent of the prospective unholy offspring of LeBron James' dunk above John Lucas and Blake Griffin's slam over Kendrick Perkins.
Some other, more serious onlookers had more serious praise for the slam as well.
"[York's slam was] maybe the best I have ever seen in a high school game," Orange Lutheran boys basketball coach Chris Nordstrom told the Los Angeles Times of York's dunk.
Of course, York does a lot more than simply dunk. The future Wildcat can also score from the field in bunches as he proved on Friday, when he dumped in 26 of Orange Lutheran's 70 team points.
A 26-point outing in the playoffs is pretty impressive, even if fans are likely to remember one of those buckets a lot more clearly than all the rest combined.
