In prep basketball, there are double-doubles and then there are performances of the caliber turned in by Van Nuys (Calif.) Grant High big man Gor Plavchyan on Saturday. In a hyped matchup against Narbonne in the Fairfax City Preview Classic, Plavchyan scored 37 points and grabbed 24 rebounds, all in regulation.
Just another day's work for a big man, huh? Considering the fact that Grant won the game 94-73, Plavchyan accounted for more than one-third of his team's total offense. As reported by the Los Angeles Times, the center scored 17 of those points in a first quarter stretch in which Grant opened up a dominant 38-12 lead, an edge from which Narbonne never truly recovered.
If you haven't heard of Plavchyan don't worry, you're not alone. The Grant senior averaged 16.6 points and 13.5 rebounds per game during the 2010-11 season. He seems to have improved on that during his senior year, in which he has dominated a handful of games.
While Plavchyan may only be starting to make a name for himself on the American high school level, he has already built up a bit of a following in Europe, where he has competed in the Under-16 European Championships for his native Armenia.
In the 2007 U16 European Championships in particular, Plavchyan played in all six of his team's games, averaging 23.3 minutes per contest, an impressive achievement that should have marked the 6-foot-8 teen for success from the moment he arrived in the U.S.
If any Southern California coaches were still unaware of Plavchyan's prolific post abilities before, they probably are prepared for him now after his Saturday bonanza.
