Almost exactly a year ago, Prep Rally brought you the story of Sean Obi, a Nigerian immigrant who emerged seemingly out of thin air to dominate the boys basketball scene in Fairfield County, Connecticut. Well, it appears that his early 2010 exploits were only the tip of the iceberg, as Obi is now busy demolishing the existing basketball records for his Westport (Conn.) Greens Farms Academy squad.
Most recently, on Saturday Obi brought in an astounding 30 rebounds in his team's victory against Brunswick (Conn.) Academy. As noted by Westport Patch, the 30 boards set a new school record, breaking the school's previous mark which was held by -- you guessed it -- Obi.
The 30 rebounds were also accompanied by a game-high 14 points from the 6-foot-9 junior in Greens Farms Academy's 51-40 victory, which improved the team's overall record to 4-3.
Perhaps more significantly, the 14 points and 30 rebounds marked the 30th consecutive game in which Obi has notched a double-double. Considering how rare those performances are at the high school level (it's the double-digit rebounds that usually provide the biggest obstacle, not the points), earning 30 in a row is nothing short of remarkable.
Given that Obi's performance just two days before his record-setting game included 24 points, 23 rebounds and six blocks, it seems a fair bet that the African native has a bright future ahead of him.
Precisely where that future lands the power forward/center prospect is certainly still open to interpretation. While Obi continues to get more attention, he lags off the national radar. He is unranked among prospects by Rivals.com, Scout.com and ESPN, and has yet to make any college contacts he has had public.
One would imagine that won't be the case if Obi pumps in more 30-rebound games. Quite frankly, any prep player that gets a season's worth of rebounds for some players in a single contest is probably a useful addition to almost any college program.
