Iowa sophomore finishes regular season with astonishing .667 batting average

Everyone makes a big deal about Miguel Cabrera’s triple crown. He's an impressive hitter, but he's no Nicole Schutt. The Iowa softball star’s batting average makes Cabrera’s penchant at the plate seem downright pedestrian.

Just look at the numbers: Cabrera finished the 2012 season batting .330. Schutt, a prep sophomore, just completed the Martensdale (Ia.) St. Mary’s High regular season with a batting average of .667. That’s twice as good as Cabrera, folks.

While Cabrera has improved to .358 in 2013, he’s still only landing a base hit one out of every three at bats on average. Schutt is getting hits two out of every three times she walks up to the plate. That’s almost unbelievable.

Fittingly, the Des Moines Register dug into the state record books and determined that Schutt’s .667 is the best batting average in state history. Considering the fact that she also drove in 65 runs and scored 49 herself in 32 games (MSM finished 30-2), that’s not half bad.

"I started off the year and thought, 'Wow, I'm having a pretty good start,' and I just continued from there," Shutt said.

Perhaps Schutt’s success at the plate is due in part to her lucky bat. The Register reported that she uses a special black bat with pink lettering for cancer awareness, inscribed with the word “Hope.”

When she comes to the plate, Schutt is bringing more than just hope. She’s bringing big time results.
