Now this is how you get the nation’s attention with sheer athleticism.
The player you see completing the rather remarkable dunk over two sizable props above is Carlee Clemons, a rising senior at Raleigh (N.C.) Millbrook High. Competing in the dunk contest at Basketball Elite Southeast Summer Showcase, an event that features the top talent in North and South Carolina, Clemons wanted to make a statement with a jam that would wow the judges.
He accomplished just that by enlisting the help of 6-foot-8 Javis Howard (a Columbia (S.C.) Irmo High superstar) and 6-foot-7 Clayton (N.C.) High star Gary Clark. Clemons is a dynamic and explosive shooting guard, but he stands just 6-foot-1, so elevating clean over two players who are a minimum of a half-foot taller than he is stands as no small feat.
Yet that’s precisely what he did in Winston Salem, clearing both players with plenty of room to spare while soaring toward the rim and finishing with a powerful flush.
The crowd erupted in appropriate response, with Clemons’ fellow Southeast Showcase competitors mobbing the rising senior to celebrate his accomplishment.
This isn't the first over-the-top dunk of Clemons' career, as you can see in this highlight reel, though it may be the first in which he literally soared over the top of vastly taller opposition.
Given the very early stages of the summer all-star showcase season, it’s likely that Clemons’ jam won’t be the last SportsCenter-quality highlight that emerges from the prep hoops ranks in June alone. Regardless, it’s one heck of a way to get the month – and summer hoops season -- started.
