The play you see below is an absolutely incredible example of a defensive lineman who is too fast, quick and athletic to be contained. It is also, more strikingly, precisely the reason why the "unnecessary roughness" penalty was invented.
The player making the WWE-style bodyslam of a quarterback in the clip above is Stone Bridge (Va.) High star Jonathan Allen, a recruit so impressive he's almost sure to be a member of the eventual Rivals 150 for his Class of 2013 when it is released next fall. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound defensive lineman already has offers from five ACC schools, as well as national power Oklahoma and Rutgers.
He also refuses to stop playing until the whistle blows -- or sometimes even after it has been blown -- and on this play, he went a bit past when the referee was trying to stop play. After absolutely cakewalking through the offensive line of opposing McLean (Va.) High, Allen latched upon McLean sophomore quarterback Danny Hecht, who was making just his second start behind center. Once he got to Hecht, however, he refused to let up until the quarterback was practically buried under the turf.
First, Allen wrapped Hecht up. Then he spun him around. Finally, he lifted him up like a doll, twists the QB completely around above his head and body slammed him into the turf.
Unsurprisingly, Allen was flagged for the hit, though he was spared the ejection that many in the crowed allegedly were calling for (that would have been a bit harsh, at least in Prep Rally's humble opinion). More incredibly, Hecht got up from the hit, brushed himself off and continued to play for the remainder of Stone Bridge's 38-6 blowout.
Does any of this mean that Allen is a bad kid, or a dirty player? Not at all. It does seem to indicate that on at least one occasion he let himself get a little carried away in the heat of the moment early in a big game.
Hecht later threw a touchdown pass, though that hardly seems like what he'll remember most from his first encounter with Stone Bridge and a top-flight recruit.
