There are great passes, and then there are the legendary dimes. The pass offered up by Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei High senior point guard Katin Reinhardt, below, falls squarely in the latter category.
As you can see above, Reinhardt somehow completed a pass in which he was literally facing backwards from where he delivered the ball. Somehow, Reinhardt appeared to realize that he had a teammate who was cutting into the paint, and he delivered a pass through his legs on a dime.
Of course, the trick about the pass is that it was physically impossible for Reinhardt to see where his teammate was heading, unless he found a way to grow eyes in the back of his head. Since that's awfully unlikely, Reinhardt must have simply had immense faith in his teammate and leaned back on an incredible feel for the flow of the game. There's a moment in the slow-mo version of the play where it appears that the 6-foot-5 Reinhardt looks behind him for his teammate, but if you watch closely it becomes clear he doesn't turn his head until after he's already delivered the ball.
Somewhere, Steve Nash should have been smiling.
The pass -- which officially counted for nothing, after the play was blown dead before a shot was taken -- was easily the play of the game in which Reinhardt's Mater Dei squad slipped past Lake Wales (Fla.) High, 76-70, at the prestigious City of Palms Classic tournament. Reinhardt added 13 points in the victory, with eight of those coming on consecutive buckets during fourth-quarter crunch time.
Of course, the UNLV commitment will probably always remember that pass rather than the buckets he did score, or the assists he did land. After all, it's not every day that a high schooler authors up the kind of pass that resonates long after the game ends.
