Believe it or not, Teen Wolf is returning to his high school to play basketball.
No, not that Teen Wolf -- not Michael J. Fox's 1985 version of Scott Howard, who might be the greatest basketball player in the history of American cinema -- but a Teen Wolf.
Tyler Hoechlin, who plays Derek Hale on the current MTV series, is hosting a celebrity basketball game at Santiago (Corona, Calif.) High, where he graduated in 2006. All proceeds will benefit the school's senior class.
The Los Angeles Times profiled Hoechlin during his junior year, when he was driving an H2 Hummer back and forth between gigs on the TV series "7th Heaven" and as a third baseman for Santiago's baseball team. According to his MaxPreps stats page, he batted .342 in 38 at-bats as a senior, totaling four RBI and zero home runs. He hit .400 as both a sophomore and junior, according to the L.A. Times and MaxPreps, respectively.
Hoechlin, who began his acting career at age 13 as Tom Hanks' son in 2002's Road to Perdition, went on to play as a college freshman at Arizona State University before transferring to UC Irvine during his sophomore year, when he batted .250. According to his IMDB.com page, he hit into the final out ever at LSU's Alex Box Stadium during the 2008 NCAA Baseball Super-Regional while playing for the Anteaters.
He reportedly turned down a role in "Twilight" to continue playing baseball, but when injuries cut that career short, he resumed acting. Between runs on "7th Heaven" and "Teen Wolf," he appeared on TV's "Castle" and in the Owen Wilson comedy "Hall Pass."
Hoechlin and his Hollywood Knights celebrity squad are scheduled to face 18 Santiago High's faculty members. If principal Reggie Thompkins is anywhere near as intimidating as Mr. Thorne in the 1985 version of Teen Wolf, they should be in for a battle.
Hoechlin's "celebrity" team is a veritable who's who of ... well who actually is who? Here's your lineup: Alex Heartman and Hector David Jr. (Power Rangers Samurai); Allen Evangelista and Greg Finley (The Secret Life of the American Teenager); Alyson Stoner (Step Up: 3D); Arlen Escarpeta (Final Destination 5); Graham Rogers (Revolution); Jared Kusnitz (Underemployed); Jeremy Sumpter (Soul Surfer); Manny Streetz (On-Air with Ryan Seacrest); Nicholas Braun (Prom); Ser'Darius Blain (Jane By Design); Texas Battle (The Bold and the Beautiful). It doesn't get more star-studded than that.
By the way, how awesome a name is Texas Battle? Do his friends call him The Alamo? He also co-starred in the basketball film Coach Carter, so he better be good. Still, nobody on either roster could possibly compare to the original Teen Wolf's legendary status.
