Alex Anzalone is one of the nation’s top football recruits, a dynamic and powerful linebacker who recently decommitted from Notre Dame in favor of Florida. However, as a Notre Dame commit Anzalone did what most top college prospects do, hanging out on campus for an in-season game (Anzalone had already committed to Notre Dame at the time). When visiting, he met and got to know Manti Teo. That makes sense, too; after all, both players are star linebackers, and Teo was just doing his part to help recruit his possible successor.
Given Teo’s popularity and Anzalone’s admiration for him, he was quick to take advantage of an opportunity to shot a photo while mugging with Notre Dame’s hero linebacker. Quite naturally, that photo landed on Twitter shortly thereafter.
That’s when things got weird.
On the photo that Anzalone posted, the Wyomissing (Pa.) High star identifies himself and Teo, though one could have probably figured out Teo was on the right given his left arm sleeve tattoo protruding from under his shirt.
As one would expect, the comments underneath the photo congratulate Anzalone, with one Twitter user even dubbing the photo “the present and the future!”
Then came the third comment, from Twitter user @lennaykay. As the world now knows, that was the Twitter handle of someone alleging to be Lennay Kekua, Manti Teo’s alleged girlfriend. Right on cue, Kekua (or whoever was pretending to be Kekua) chimed in with a note of congratulations for Anzalone.
Awww he was telling me about you! Congrats! I’m Lennay, btw, his gf. Blessings!
As Anzalone himself tweeted out as the Kekua saga unraveled on Wednesday, “Who the heck was this?”
Only time will tell if we ever learn who Lennay Kekua truly was, or who was pretending to be her across the worlds of social media and telephone. What we do know now, thanks to Anzalone, was that the specter of Lenny Kekua even reached into Notre Dame’s recruiting efforts.
