Former NBA All-Star Kenny Anderson's bizarre tenure as head basketball coach of a tiny Jewish high school in Florida may come to an end before he even gets a chance to adapt to all of its unique cultural traditions.
Just months after Anderson shocked the general public by accepting the head basketball coaching position at Davie (Fla.) David Posnack Jewish Day School, the newly-minted coach found himself in the local police blotter for leaving the scene of an accident after consuming alcohol.
As reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Anderson was confronted by police on Sunday at his home after he had fled the scene of a wreck involving his white Cadillac Escalade and two trees in Miramar, Florida, near where he coaches the David Posnack team. Police from neighboring Pembroke Pines arrived at the former star point guard's house and told him to return to the scene of the crash, which he did.
Anderson admitted consuming alcohol at a bar before the crash, which he claims occurred on his way home from the local establishment. The former Georgia Tech star told police officers that he lost control of his car when one of his tires exploded and he crashed into a curb and the two trees. Police noted that not one or two, but all four of Anderson's tires were blown out when the vehicle was seen at his house.
"All four tires were blown out and the rims were bent," a police officer stated in the official report, which was obtained by the Journal-Constitution.
While Anderson was not cited for any alcoholic violations, he was handed a misdemeanor charge for leaving the scene of an accident. Posnack Day School has yet to have any comment on the coach's charge, and there is no indication that it will summarily cut ties with its most famous employee.
Still, fleeing the scene of an accident certainly isn't the kind of thing that anyone at the school would want to foster in its young athletes, and it certainly wasn't the kind of media attention that the school was hoping to foster by bringing Anderson on board.
