Kevin Love’s school single game points record is broken by Lake Oswego senior

Minnesota Timberwolves power forward Kevin Love has earned plenty of notable basketball achievements. He has the longest consecutive streak of points-rebounds double doubles sin a professional game ince the NBA/ABA merger. He is the all-time leading scorer in Oregon high school basketball history with 2,628 points. He was both a Gatorade National Player of the Year and Naismith Prep Player of the Year in 2007. He led UCLA to a Final Four berth and was an All-American and Pac-10 Player of the Year in his lone collegiate season. He is an NBA All-Star and Olympic gold medal holder.

Yet, after Tuesday there is one notable thing that Love isn’t: The leading single-game scorer for his hometown Lake Oswego (Ore.) High Lakers. Rather, Love’s prior Lake Oswego mark of 50 points was surpassed by Lake Oswego senior Calvin Hermanson, who scored an incredible 52 points in an 87-52 Lakers road victory against Longview (Wash.) Mark Morris High.

Considering the fact that Mark Morris scored the same amount of points as a team as Love did as an individual, that is one stirring mark.

Yet, as impressive as Hermanson’s total may be, the most amazing thing about his new record may be how he achieved it. According to Lake Oswego coach Mark Shoff, Hermanson’s shed-load of buckets all came in the normal offensive flow of the game.

“It was all pretty much within the offense,” Shoff told the Oregonian. “Guys were finding him. He was in the right place at the right time.”

Hermanson certainly has the talent and the size to hit the kind of mark he achieved on Tuesday. The senior stands 6-foot-6, has speed and a deft touch that saw him finish 20-of-28 from the field and 8-of-8 from the free throw line.

According to the Oregonian, Hermanson’s night was even better than a cursory glance at the box score might indicate. Hermanson reportedly added eight blocks to his 52 points. Two more and he could have added to the allure of what was a truly spectacular shooting evening for Hermanson and the rest of the Lake Oswego program.
