Questions arise over buzzer beater in major high school upset

At this point, West Charlotte (N.C.) High's 62-59 upset of traditional boys basketball power Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha Catholic School stands as one of the bigger upsets of the 2012-13 season. The issue now is whether it should have been an upset at all.

As first noted by Capitol Hoops, a site focused on high school hoops in the Washington, D.C. area, it would have been virtually impossible for West Charlotte to successfully get the shot off before the buzzer.

The ball was inbounded with 0.4 seconds remaining, and as one clock-imposed, time-slowed video demonstrated, it took approximately 0.8 seconds for West Charlotte's Trey Foster to hit his "game-winning" shot.

Forget that the shot capped a remarkable comeback for West Charlotte, which trailed by 10 points at the midway point of the fourth quarter. The fact that the shot wouldn't have counted would not have earned DeMatha a win … though it would have sent the game into overtime.

Instead, the game ended with a sudden last second shot that doubled as a punch to the gut for DeMatha fans, who aren't accustomed to losing streaks. DeMatha coach Mike Jones said he couldn't remember the last time that the Stags suffered through a two-game losing streak, let alone a three-game stretch to start a season.

"That doesn't happen," Jones told the Maryland Gazette. "Not at DeMatha."

This year it somehow has, even if perhaps it shouldn't have.
