Just in time for the end of the high school football season there's a new contender for catch of the season. To double everyone's pleasure, it comes with one of the overly excited calls of the year, too.
The remarkable first-down catch and run you see above comes from the Virginia Group AA, Division III state title game. With Fredericksburg (Va.) James Monroe High facing a third-and-22 in the fourth quarter, Monroe quarterback Kendal BeCraft took a snap and a short drop, then released a bullet pass down the field just as he got leveled by an oncoming Brookfield (Va.) High defensive lineman.
Incredibly, despite the pressure BeCraft's pass was delivered to the vicinity of wide receiver Byran Johnson, though it appeared to be too high for BeCraft to bring it in. No bother, Johnson just channeled his inner Calvin Johnson (no relation), extended a mighty palm for the ball at full stretch, then miraculously came down in balance and kept running downfield.
As memorable as the catch was, the play-by-play of the grab was just as notable, with the unidentified microphoned man offering up an exuberant "You can not make that catch!"
Evidently you can if you're Byran Johnson.
The result of the catch and run was a 30-yard gain, good enough to give James Monroe a late first down. The first down set the stage for a final Monroe touchdown which cut Brookfield's lead to 24-14.
Eventually that was the final score, with Brookfield celebrating a second consecutive title game victory against Monroe. Still, at least in this loss Monroe clearly left with the most memorable play, which is worthy of being considered one of the most memorable of the season, too.
