Middletown (Conn.) Xavier Academy won the Connecticut Class LL title by a one-sided final score of 48-14. Yet, in a unique twist, it was a player for the vanquished Norwich (Conn.) Free Academy (NFA) who received much of the postgame attention.

As reported by the Hartford Courant, Elisa Formiglio became the first female to score points in a football championship game in state history. With NFA already facing a steep deficit, Formiglio connected on a pair of extra points in the first half.

Naturally, those extra points were largely overshadowed by Xavier's historic Class LL three-peat.

Still, as she had previously told the Courant, Formiglio said that her entire football experience had been eye-opening. As chronicled by MaxPreps, Formiglio is a former volleyball player who was literally pulled out of an NFA gym class and encouraged to try kicking for the football team.

The result was the third-most prolific scorer for NFA's 2012 campaign. Formiglio connected on 61 of 71 extra-point attempts and also connected on a 24-yard field goal.

"Girls don't get a lot of opportunities to play football," Formiglio told the Courant. "I'm really hoping other girls, or other people in general will just try something new. I didn't know what was going to happen. I was trying something new. I feel that's important -- to have the courage to try something new."
