Move over Kordell Stewart. You've got some company.
With a trip to Met Life Stadium and a spot in the New Jersey North 1, Group 1 championship game on the line, Pompton (N.J.) Lakes High quarterback Robbie Myers unleashed a 42-yard pass that required just about every ounce of his body behind it. The ball floated toward the end zone, where it was nearly intercepted by a Saddle Brook (N.J.) High defender.
In fact, as noted by the Bergen Record among other sources, the pass was nearly intercepted by two different Saddle Brook defenders. Instead, those failed attempts to bring in the ball kept the pass alive, eventually knocking the ball right to senior wide receiver Daniel Foote.
Foote made sure not to waste the good fortune that had suddenly come his way, pulling in a miraculous touchdown grab as time expired, earning Pompton Lakes a 39-33, North 1 Group 1 semifinal victory.
The lesson, as always: Don't try to be a hero and intercept the pass, just knock the thing down.
"I've been around Pompton Lakes football forever, and I've never seen a play like that," Pompton Lakes coach Scott Mahoney told the Record. "You just never know, one in a million. And we hit it today."
The touchdown provided a stunning coda to a fierce matchup which had seemed ticketed for overtime practically since it first kicked off. Saddle Brook effectively attacked Pompton Lake's vaunted defense all day, and whereas the Cardinals had allowed just 46 points all season entering the game, they allowed 33 in the semifinal.
Eventually, that still couldn't keep them from a win, thanks to Foote's remarkable grab, leaving the Saddle Brook defense sprawled across the field despondently while Pompton Lake celebrated an appearance at Met Life Stadium in absolute delirium.
