California school scores on double trick play to close 1st half, eventually wins title by 1 point

What's better than a trick play touchdown that nets a touchdown with no time remaining in the first half? A double trick play touchdown that nets a touchdown with no time remaining in the first half … and eventually proves to be the decisive measure between two teams in a playoff game.

As reported by the Redding Record Searchlight -- and brought to Prep Rally's attention by USA Today -- Enterprise (Calif.) High scored a miraculous touchdown as time expired in the first half of the school's CIF Northern Section Division I final against rival Paradise (Calif.) High. With just enough time for one final play, Enterprise quarterback Zack Trueblood used  an abbreviated Statue of Liberty handoff to running back Brad Woods.

The initial "trickeration" was enough to earn Woods some space to roll into the Paradise backfield, but the Bobcats still had enough defenders back to thwart him from reaching the end zone. What those defenders didn't count on, however, was Woods' vision and oncoming help from Enterprise teammate Taylor Angley-Holman, who caught a perfectly pitched lateral as Woods was thrown to the turf, picked up a block and raced to the end zone.

Now that is one heck of a tricky touchdown.

As it turns out, every point from the miracle score was essential, too, with the Enterprise Hornets escaping with a 36-35 win thanks to a late two-point conversion pass from Trueblood to teammate Izzy Matthews in the game's final minute.

The margin of victory made the Section title all the more sweet for Enterprise, which was able to avenge a one-point loss to Paradise in the regular season, when the Bobcats prevailed 42-41 in double overtime. Still, the championship marked the third consecutive year that Enterprise had topped Paradise in the Section title game.

This time the Hornets finished with the upper hand, but they only ended up there thanks to one heck of a touchdown at the end of the first half.
