Of all the passes that Skyline (Wash.) High senior superstar QB Max Browne threw in his team's Class WIAA Class 4A state semifinal victory against Camas (Wash.) High, the one that stood out most didn't even account for any yards.
As noted by the Seattle Times and captured by PlayOn Sports, Browne played the first cog in a delicate Skyline trick play that helped set the stage for the Spartans' 51-28 victory against an explosive Camas team that some had picked to upset Skyline. With Camas' defense already reeling from Browne's efficient passing -- he would finish the game 29 of 32 for 387 yards and four touchdowns -- Browne took a shotgun snap and fired the ball on a clean bounce to wide receiver Matt Sinatro.
The receiver fielded the "bounce pass" cleanly, though he briefly stopped to feint as if he had picked up an incomplete pass. Of course, the ball was still live, so he fired a subsequent bomb downfield to fellow wideout Nic Sblendorio, who pulled in the second pass of the down for a 49-yard touchdown reception.
If the bounce pass touchdown looks a bit familiar, that's because it's already happened once this year in Florida. As Prep Rally reported in October, Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Westminster Academy used a similar trick in a game against Coral Springs (Fla.) Charter School.
The Browne-to-Sinatro-to-Sblendorio connection set the stage for a Skyline touchdown in the third quarter, part of a 44-point run that began with the Spartans trailing, 14-7. Eventually Camas would score another couple touchdowns, but by that point the game was already out of reach in Skyline's favor, thanks mostly to Browne's heroics.
"He's one of the best I've ever seen, so he's impressive," Camas coach Jon Eagle told the Times. "It takes a lot to beat that team."
Besides, the late Camas touchdowns weren't nearly as memorable as the double-receiver pass utilized by Skyline earlier in the game, a surprising exclamation mark on the team's return trip to the state title game.
