If this week wasn't already characterized by so many things -- Hurricane Sandy and final campaigning before the impending presidential election, among them -- it could almost make its mark for high school players somehow intercepting footballs that were kicked up to them like a soccer ball.
First it was Atlanta (Ga.) Grady High defensive lineman DeAndre Brown, taking this crazy hack sack interception to the house. Further inspection actually showed that Brown wasn't alone in his quick thinking — and kicking — heroics, with Montvale (N.J.) St. Joseph Regional School defensive back Troy Kay completing an interception that was started by teammate Mark Fossati.
There may not be an official stat that accounts for assists on an interception, but if there was one, Fossati would deserve the best assist of the year. While Brown's self-assisted INT did carry more of a hacky sack or ball-juggling air, Fossati's kick was more of a back heel, bringing with it a little bit of class, as a soccer commentator might put it.
Kay couldn't quite bring his return back to the house as Brown did, but he did make significant headway upfield, all helping set St. Joseph up for another score in what would become a 48-27 whitewash of regional Catholic rival Wayne (N.J.) DePaul High.
St. Joseph took control of this game early, so the interception may not have been the most impactful one pulled in by a Green Knight defender in 2012, but one thing is certain: It almost certainly will prove to be the most memorable.
