A Minnesota running back had a record-shattering night on Tuesday, scoring a state-best 52 points by himself in leading his team to a victory in a playoff football game.
As reported by the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Cook County (Minn.) High senior running back Peter Warren scored his 52 points on 8 touchdowns and 2 two-point conversions during Cook County's one-sided 70-6 quarterfinal victory against Cass (Minn.) Lake Buena High. The senior's 8 touchdowns also tied a state record for most touchdowns in a single game, a mark which hadn't been achieved in 46 years.
While the sheer weight of Warren's scoring on Tuesday is enough to impress, his feat becomes even more stunning when one considers that he only played in three periods of the game. With Cook County holding a seemingly insurmountable lead near the end of the third quarter, Cook County head football coach Mitch Dorr opted to hold out his starters for the duration of the fourth quarter, leaving Warren on the sideline, sitting on a new state record but foregoing the chance to amass even more gaudy statistics in the name of sportsmanship.
That's probably all for the best, as Cook County is likely to need Warren's penchant for finding the end zone even more keenly in the forthcoming semifinals and finals, should they get that far.
As for the senior, he could probably use the rest himself, too. Warren scored on touchdown runs of 2, 5, 5, 38, 10, 7, 6 and 23 yards, with more than one-third of his 19 rushes finishing in the end zone.
With another playoff game coming Saturday against Blackduck (Minn.) High, Warren won't have much time off to appreciate the spoils of his record-setting night. For a workhorse like Warren, that might be even more motivation to go out and put up even better numbers … if that's even possible.
