The sordid prostitution scandal that has haunted a Maine town has trickled down to the realm of high school sports, with a legendary hockey coach resigning after his name was included on an initial list of johns who visited alleged prostitute Alexis Wright.
As reported by the Associated Press and a variety of other sources, among the 21 names of reported johns who visited Wright's Kennebunk prostitution practice, which she hosted out of a reputed Zumba studio, was Kennebunk (Me.) High hockey coach Donald Hill, a 53-year-old man who currently lives in Orchard Beach, a town slightly up the Maine cost from Kennebunk.
Hill has served as the head hockey coach at Kennebunk for a 14 consecutive years, leading the program throughout multiple generations of students. With a population of just 10,000, Kennebunk High is a small school with an appropriately sized athletic department. Still, the Kennebunk Rams serve as an important part of the town's identity beyond its well-known status as a sleepy, pristine beach town.
Among the different Rams squads, few have had a bigger role than the Rams hockey team in hockey-mad Maine, even amidst three consecutive seasons with six or fewer victories following the program's regional final appearance in 2008.
After 14 years, Hill earned leeway to survive a few rough seasons. What he hadn't earned was any right to patronize a prostitute, even while members of the Kennebunk hockey booster club and other officials refused to offer any negative comments regarding Hill's resignation.
"[There are] more important things to focus on," Kennebunk Ice Hockey booster Doug Oakman told the AP.
