Don't ask the Klamath Falls (Ore.) Triad School football team if it was trying to set a scoring record in racking up 106 points during the squad's victory on Friday night. It wasn't. Rather, they were just trying to keep in front of a hard charging Elkton (Ore.) High squad, which scored 66 points of its own.

Between the two teams, 172 points were scored in an eight-man football game, setting a state record for points in a single game. As reported by the Oregonian, Triad won the game with 106 points and could have even scored more were it not for coach Kyle Petrik's decision to take a knee on the game's final four plays with Triad holding the ball inside the Elkton 1-yard line.

"We were at the 1-foot line and took a knee on the last four plays," Petrik told the Oregonian. "We were hoping to show some class."

Given the rate at which points were scored throughout the game, the people who appreciated that gesture most may have been the game officials. Petrik said that by the final whistle one of the referees was, "just dragging his foot" because he was so exhausted.

Still, Petrik explained that there was a real reason for Triad to continue scoring points in a game that appeared to be decided in the fourth quarter. Based on the district tiebreaker formula used in Triad's region, wins of up to 35 points are a factor in determining playoff seeding. Making matters more clear-cut is the fact that a running clock only begins when a team builds up a lead of 45 points or more.

As it turns out, Triad never reached that 45-point threshold, despite tying a national record for touchdowns in a game; the Timberwolves scored 16 touchdowns on 17 possessions, racking up an astounding 815 yards of total offense in the process.

According to the Oregonian, the 106-point explosion was just the latest high-scoring win for Triad, which is averaging an incredible 70.7 points per game. There's still time for that average to go up, too, which would push the team into the lead in terms of Oregon's points-per-game average.

For now, one 106-point game is enough, especially since it brought along a win with it, even if that win was a lot closer than most would have expected it to be, given Triad's offensive performance.
