High school football is played on many nights in different states. Practically all states host games on Fridays and Thursdays, with most also utilizing Saturdays for some games. Some states like Texas even have occasional games on Wednesdays. Yet the one day on which high school football games are practically never played is Monday.
That wasn't the case on Monday in Pennsylvania, where Pennsbury (Pa.) High hosted a contest that wasn't originally intended to be played on the rather unorthodox night. As it turns out, Pennsbury had little choice but to delay its game against Council Rock (Pa.) South High, for a rather unique reason: Council Rock South's players had suffered from a massive skin infection outbreak leading up to the team's game on Friday. The bacterial culprit was reportedly a strain of MRSA, with seven students diagnosed with cases of Impetigo and 18 others feared to be have been exposed to the infection.
As reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer and a variety of other Philadelphia-area sources, much of the entire Council Rock South student body was afflicted with a bizarre skin infection. On Thursday, the team's practice was canceled so the entire squad could be subjected to skin inspections, and those subsequent tests uncovered 20 cases of noticeable skin abrasions.
After that discovery, Council Rock South principal Albert Funk decided to postpone Friday's game, with the two schools eventually deciding to play it on Monday instead. During the three-day hiatus Council Rock South sanitized all of the school's facilities, from it's weight room to the team showers, and the school's outbreak was deemed to be sufficiently contained.
As such, Council Rock South re-opened its doors on Monday, and the game was played as rescheduled, with Pennsbury emerging with a 28-7 victory against a still undermanned Council Rock squad. Naturally, the final score was a less pressing concern for the Council Rock players than the health and safety of teammates, with all hoping for a return to normalcy — and Friday football — at the first opportunity.
