There have been plenty of great catches in plenty of great games across the country this year. Still, none may be more impressive than the one pulled in by Excelsior Springs (Mo.) High wideout Nick Masoner, who somehow grabbed a ball behind an opponent's back, shifted it to one hand and then took off unscathed for the end zone.
Now that is one heck of a touchdown grab.
It's hard to fully grasp exactly how Masoner came through with his highlight reel grab, but his instincts were able to come through for him. He started be elevating above the cornerback covering him, who had his back turned to the incoming football.
With the pass from Excelsior Springs quarterback Alex Vanfossan throw behind Masoner, the receiver stopped short and took a straight leap up to get some sort of leverage against his defender. He then managed to grab the ball while pinning it against the Harrisonville (Mo.) High defensive back, eventually transferring the football to one hand while slipping away from the defender and sprinting to the end zone.
Incredibly, the highlight reel grab -- which made it's way to SportsCenter's Top 10 shortly thereafter -- wasn't even Masoner's only near-miraculous grab in the game. Earlier in the contest the receiver pulled in a pass which was thrown to the sideline, tip-toeing his way ahead while a defender went flying into the sidelines.
Even with his two fabulous grabs, Masoner still couldn't lead Excelsior Springs to a win, with Harrisonville emerging from the Missouri-Kansas borderland faceoff with a 33-27 win. Still, few will forget Masoner's big night. The poor soul who was earmarked to defend him certainly won't.
