Brett Favre absorbs first loss of prep coaching career thanks to a ridiculous 4th down desperation heave

Through five games, Brett Favre's prep coaching career was going even better than he could have hoped for. Hattiesburg (Miss.) Oak Grove High won its first five games by an aggregate score of 180-59, with Favre's newly installed offense clicking on all cylinders and the Warriors' defense holding up its end of the bargain. For most of Thursday night's matchup against Petal (Miss.) High that held true as well.

Then, the play you see above happened, and Favre's unbeaten streak came to an abrupt end.

As covered by the Hattiesburg American, Petal quarterback Larson Barkurn connected with receiver Jamarcus Revies on a pure desperation heave with just more than a minute remaining in Thursday night's 24-21 Petal victory. Facing a 4th-and-17, Barkurn bought time by scrambling in the backfield and then channeled his inner Favre, unleashing a prayer of a heave that eventually landed in Revies' arms in the end zone.

The result was a surprising Petal lead and, just more than a minute later, a signature victory in one of the biggest and best rivalries in Mississippi's Pine Belt region. On the other side of the coin, the Oak Grove loss will go down as the first in Favre's prep coaching career.

The wild play-by-play call of the desperation heave was pretty entertaining, too.

"I didn't know what to call because we just kind of made up that play," Barkurn told the American. "And we had struggled in the red zone all night. Before halftime, I made a stupid play and they intercepted me."

Somehow, Petal pulled it off, sending Favre into a frantic tirade on the sideline, as you can see via the Deadspin .gif linked above. While it's understandable that Favre would be upset with the way Oak Grove fell short, he of all people should appreciate the kind of play that Barkurn pulled off.

In fact, knowing Favre he probably will go back and take some close notes of the pre-snap alignment of that final play. After all, you never know when a heave like that might come in handy down the stretch for the Warriors.
